Hitting is part science and part art. I will choose to believe Casey Schmitt has a great foundation to be a very good ML hitter because he has shown he can hit to all fields.

My guess is he will get frustrated with his performance, realize the pitchers at the ML level have the ability to control location more, and change his approach.

Here’s a look at Schmitt so far a month into his MLB career:

He is 75th percentile in MLB hard hit ball rate and has a .323 BABIP. He just need to find a couple more of his pitches to hit per game, which he can do by being more selective, and he will be what the Giants need him to be.

Of course, I’m not sure if that is everyday 3B or SS. A lot depends on what happens with Luciano.

Schmitt is, I believe, going to be a solid MLB player for a long time.  But he has to improve his pitch selection.  He’s walked once in about 110 PAs.  His chase rate is the highest in baseball.  That has to change.  On the positive side, he’s very quick middle in, which is always a key.  And he has some pop.  He just needs to learn the zone better.  Whether he does that at SF or in Sac is the question.  

BTW, Luciano is heating up.  Big time.  OPS over .800. 10 HRs.  He has cut down his K’s recently.  Hit a 432 foot HR to right center yesterday.

Harrison finally went 5.  83 pitches.  Big step.

First sweep of St.L on the road in 25 years.

Also, it was the second time this season, SF won when down to their last strike in the ninth.  Earlier this season, Sabol hit 2 run HR on a 1-2 pitch v. the Cardinals with the Giants behind 4-3.  

St. Louis has been a Giants nemesis for years.  It was good to see them go 6-1 v. the Cards even if the Redbirds are struggling.

Two other interesting points...after Yaz's home run heroics, Pederson made the final out, so his spot was due to be the automatic runner on second base to start the 10th inning. Kapler and the coaches were discussing which pitcher should run for the slow-footed Pederson when pitching coach JP Martinez relayed a comment from their assistant coach/bullpen catcher, Brant Whiting (Stanford MSE '14). Whiting, a 30th round pick of the Dodgers who played four years in their system, observed that even though both leagues employ a universal DH now, the automatic runner rule hasn't changed from 2020. When a pitcher occupies the lineup spot that made the final out -- Pederson was DH'ing for the pitcher -- the team can elect to send out the position player who batted one spot earlier...in this case, Yastrzemski, who scored the go-ahead run on a single by Estrada.

After the game, Kapler credited Whiting for the call. "It was a of immense proportions moment for us. We know good information can get to the dugout from a number of different sources. It's really impressive Brant Whiting was on his game because I don't know if there's a bigger moment in the game than the phone ringing right there. Obviously, Yaz's homer. But that was kind of a big deal." 

Second, the Giants are 25-15 since May 2 with a +49 run differential. That's tied for the most wins in MLB and the best run differential in the National League during the past six weeks..

We should know more about this team after next 10:  3 in LA, then home for 4 vs Pads and 3 vs DBacks

As to when the 11 made their debut I don’t know.  Other than Cepeda  and Davenport were in the opening day line up

NEar as I can tell, apart from Davenport and Cepeda, it was Felipe Alou, Willie Kirkland, John Fitzgerald, Bob Schmidt, Joe Shipley, Don Taussig, Nick Testa, Leon Wagner and Dom Zanni. 

Davenport (13 yrs in bigs, 1 all star team) & Cepeda (17 years in bigs, 7 all star teams) started, so did Kirkland (9 year career, 3 w/giants) who started 112 games in RF. Schmidt started 123 games behind the plate. He was an All Star as a rookie, and he played 7 years in the bigs, but after his three years with the Giants, he was traded to Cincy.

The others were role players. Felipe Alou (17 year career, 3 all star games)  played 75 games, 28 in LF, 3 in CF and 44 in RF, the others as PH/PR. Leon Wagner (12 year career, 2 all star teams, just first two seasons with Giants) played 74 games with 56 starts at 3B. Taussig played 39 games, mainly in LF, and had 10 starts. He played one more year for ST. Lou and one year for Houston.

Fitzgerald, Shipley, Testa and Zanni only played one game apiece. Shipley pitched for three years, was ineffective. Zanni played for the Giants for three years, but was a last-guy-off-the-bench reliever. Testa and Fitzgerald only played the one game. Testa had a 14 year minor league career and just the one game for SFG at age 30. He played one inning at catcher, had one chance and made one error. He ultimately became the Yankees' batting practice coach for five of their WS teams.
