I am not so sure I agree that the University needs to "find a way to make this work". First, it is unclear that NIL can be "made to work" without unintended consequences that the University really doesn't want. As many on this board have pointed out, the time may come, perhaps sooner than we all would want, that the University will simply decide college athletics as it exists today is incompatible with the goals of the University.
IMHO nobody knows what the "end state" on this issue is going to be. Athletes as University employees is one possible outcome, among others. It is going to be a rough ride for many institutions to go from where we are now to where this situation stabilizes. In an ideal world, the Universities would attempt to design an outcome that preserves the "collegiate" part of NCAA athletics. Unfortunately, that just isn't going to happen, and what does happen may indeed remove athletics from many colleges. Figuring out how to keep NIL from destroying team chemistry is indeed a significant issue, but IMO only one of many that can crash the entire system.
