Let me throw a curve ball into all the calculations.  Enrollment in American Universities in many regions is about to crash.

It is going to hit the Midwest and Northeast particularly hard.  The most prestigious universities will fill their enrollments quite well, but many others will dwindle, and suffer concomitant budgetary disasters.  It is hard for me to imagine the Big 10, for example, continuing their dominance when most of their universities will be under severe financial pressures for years to come.  I would hate to be Penn State.

California, Texas, and Florida have large immigrant populations and will largely resist the college enrollment slump because of them.  Florida and Texas, however, have other severe problems with their higher education systems that may spill over to affect them financially and in other ways. 

In short, intercollegiate athletics has to be supported by well funded, vibrant universities, and Stanford is situated to do this well indefinitely, but many other universities are not.  A glimmer of hope.
