Stanford's historic presidential turnover:
Jordan, 1891-1913 (23 years)
Branner, 1913-15 (3 years)
Wilber, 1916-43 (28 years)
Tresidder, 1943-48 (6 years)
Sterling, 1949-68 (20 years)
Pitzer, 1968-70 (3 years)
Lyman, 1970-80 (11 years)
Kennedy, 1980-92 (13 years)
Casper, 1992-2000 (9 years)
Hennessy, 2000-16 (17 years)
Tessier-Lavigne, 2016-23 (8 years)
I'm not sure when that cliff list was generated, but I'd say at least every fourth link to a president on it is to the current president who is someone else.
I'm not sure a usual suspect list is the way to go. Based on the linked list, I like the guy currently at DeAnza. His sport coat game is outstanding.
I'll put a plug in for my classmate Gary May, BEE '85.
St. Louis native, advanced degrees from Berkeley, semiconductor guy, NAE, the Chancellor at Davis for 6.5 years and prior to that served as GT's Dean of the College of Engineering, which per his Davis bio is "the largest and most diverse school of its kind in the nation." When GT changed its lead horse, his name kept coming up on the sports boards but he had just started at Davis and everyone is happy with Angel Cabrera.
Haven't bothered to know if his tenure has been full of controversy - I think he gets heat for participating in outside boards and a defense contractor specifically, but I think one would want a leader that has dealt with controversy.
