I admit I find the Big12 problematic. In general, I think it’s a bad cultural fit in general. Specifically, I find Baylor very problematic for both us and Berkeley.

I would rather go independent as a last resort.

Baylor is a Baptist university that openly opposes homosexuality. Notre Dame is a Catholic university that openly opposes abortion. BYU is a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints university that openly opposes premarital sex. Prospective students who favor what these universities clearly oppose might deem them to be a "bad cultural fit" and wisely shop elsewhere for a university. That would be completely understandable. But I cannot support the notion that Stanford should refuse to compete against these universities and those similarly situated. "Culture" is a wide term encompassing many different facets. If we start having culture tests for sports opponents, we might quickly find ourselves with a small universe of potential opponents.

By the way, lots of things happen on the Stanford campus that I find obnoxious. But I still support Stanford.

We don’t have to agree, but I draw the line at unsafe environments for some of our students and student athletes. BYU is so Stone Age on sex it’s funny, but it doesn’t impact our students. Norte Dame is the same for me on abortion. Baylor to my view is at a different level that could impact our students directly. Not interested.
