IMO Walter Rouse has explained his situation quite well. He came to Stanford with a primary focus of academics and a secondary focus on football. His experiences at Stanford, both in academics and in football, revealed that he possibly has a future in the NFL. As he points out, that window of opportunity is a narrow one in time. He has shifted his focus to football and transferring was a necessary step in maximizing his NFL potential. Makes all the sense in the world IMO. Rouse says he fully intends to complete his Stanford degree, as I understand his comments. Whether he does or does not, changing your goals may require leaving Stanford. This is especially true if the goals have a time limit associated with them.

Well said.  Your comments reminded me of the Russell White saga (only vice versa).  He arrived at Cal as a highly recruited Prop 48 athlete (his academics disqualified him from playing his freshman year) with aspirations of playing in the NFL.  It was all about football.  

Once his learning disability (dyslexia) was diagnosed and addressed, he began to focus his efforts on academics and earning a degree.  He became a true student-athlete opting to return his senior year to continue his schooling rather than turn pro.  The rest is history - he was a third round choice of the Rams but fizzled out quickly.  OTOH, he has been very successful working with youth as a teacher, coach and school administrator.
