It must be "NFC" (near field communication) that you have to turn on on your phone for tickets to work now.

Stanford's scanners have had the ability to work with either NFC or bar codes / QR codes for several years. I can't imagine why they want to start forcing NFC in the middle of a season.

I'm fairly sure it's possible to have a phone that still works fine but is too old to have NFC capability.
