Brennan hired Duane Akina as his defensive coordinator.

Akina was already there. Retaining him was politically a plus, as he is well liked at UofA.

Akina had already agreed to join Sark's staff at Texas (also politically a plus for Texas), and was likely offered the DC job to get him to change his mind.

I didn't know that. Isn't it a bit strange that Akina wanted the DC job? I thought he was not interested in the hassle involved and just wanted to coach DBs. He certainly seemed senior enough to have had a DC job long ago if he wanted it.
