Okay, I have to get this off my chest. I don't like to complain about refs, but last night seemed extraordinary. At the start of the game, the refs were calling the game very closely. They whistled several hand check fouls that you don't see called in womens' basketball much. I welcomed this approach by the refs because I've seen too many games when the refs let the game get too physical. However, I don't think these refs were consistent with their calls. They allowed Crooks to slam her body into Cam and Kiki under the basket on offense and they allowed her to go over the top on rebounds. Crooks repeatedly used her off arm and shoulder to clear the defender. I think she uses this approach because she doesn't appear to be able to jump more than a couple of inches off the floor. They whistled Cam when she did the same thing as Crooks or even less.
It makes you wonder if they were compensating for Crooks body mass index when allowing her to use her body against defenders. It must have been extremely frustrating for Cam to be suffering this physical abuse by Crooks only to be whistled for a foul when she made minimal contact. On the last foul called on Cam, it appeared that she and Crooks both had their hands on the ball while rebounding, which should have been called a jump ball. However, Cam was in front of Crooks. Why was Cam and not Crooks called for the foul? It makes you wonder if there was a bias or an agenda by one or more of these refs.
I have said before, I think Cam complains too much about non-calls when she is fouled. This undoubtedly gets under the skin of refs and probably leads to more non-calls. She really needs to stop her complaining. If we are going to beat NC State and win our Elite 8 game, we need Cam on the floor for extended minutes. I sure hope Tara, and maybe her mom and dad, talk to her about this issue.
BTW, last night our WBB team logged their 30th win of the season!
