Finding players who want an easier path to start on paper is a great way to wind up with a team that isn't very good. Which all begs the question of why portal players are so desirable. I mean those unhappy with playing time, not the established superstars.

Undergrads including basketball players and MBA students at Scheller College of Business found that statistically, transfers do not typically improve their performance after jumping schools and the schools that most used the portal between 2018 and 2022 did not experience a statistically significant improvement in performance. The main takeaway: "If you can recruit a good class coming in [out of high school], it tends to bode well for the success of the team."
