Wouldn’t a student (athlete or non-athlete) who transfers out of Stanford have to apply to transfer back?  And, outside of athletics, the transfer success rate is minimal, so an athlete who exhausted eligibility and wants to transfer back would be facing long odds.

I thought that the magic number was 2.  If he or she completed two years at Stanford, then they could come back and get their degree without a lot of hassel.
