Subscribers to both the Chron and The NY Times can gift 10 free articles to share a month, and the links (at least for the Times) are good for multiple users. Let me know if this gift article link for a story on Ledecky's dominance in the 1500 works for more than one of you. if so I'll try to post gift links when possible.
non-subscribers to the NYTimes (at least those with a Santa Clara County Library card) can get what appears to be an unlimited number of three day passes to the NYTimes, you log in to your library account, go to their e-news sections, select the NYTimes, choose your access type and hit redeem and get three days of access. After three days repeat.
