Washington was going to have "challenges" this year no matter what. Last year's team had 10 players drafted by the NFL. Four others were UDFA. They were a mature bunch that left a very big hole by their departure. When the coach left it added another problem. Players were now free to leave with no stigma attached. The new head coach (Jedd Fisch) was expected to bring a pretty good "haul" of transfers with him from the University of Arizona. In particularĀ Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan were considered "locks" to transfer. Neither did. That all by itself was a major blow to this year's Washington team. Fisch may have success in the future, but this year he simply lacks the talent and experience. Losing to Rutgers is probably below the reasonable expectations for this team, but not by much. Missing several field goals was more than enough to remove the available slack.
