The problem is that there is a ratcheting effect. Sure, everything was very exciting when Harbaugh took us to the Sun Bowl after 5 Bowl-less years and even more exciting the next year when we went to the Orange Bowl. But three years later, when we went to the Rose Bowl for the second consecutive year, the level of excitement was already starting to taper off, and 5 years later when we were back in the Sun Bowl, excitement for the team was way lower than it had been ten years earlier, despite the fact that we had 10 consecutive years of winning.
If we were to significantly improve in the remaining few games and be on the way to a Bowl Game next year, there would be a lot of excitement given that we have been consistently terrible since 2019. But fans would always want more, and if we were to be consistently good but not great (mid-tier bowl) for a while, attendance would be better than it is now, but hardly phenomenal.
