The official Stanford site buried the lede of the story in today's first round of the Nanea Invitational.

"The defending national champion Cardinal, starting four freshmen, have a two-stroke lead after a thirteen-under par first round performance.  . ."

And:

"Six Cardinal are in the top 12 of 59-player field."

Of possible significance, too, is that Stanford's highest-ranked player entering the season, Andrea Revuelta, broke out with only her second under-par round of the season, a three-under 70.

And worth mentioning: how is it that Stanford is hosting an event in Hawaii? Almost certainly the reason: the course, which some consider one of the country's ten best, was built (by Scotsman David Kidd of Bandon Dunes fame) for a Stanford alum, Charles Schwab.
