What does the roster limit of 15 that Bob mentions mean exactly and who sets it? I seem to recall in the past there was a 15 player limit set by the Pac-12 conference that applied to the travel squad. So in theory at least (if players were willing), you could have more than 15 for home games, but only 15 could travel to road games. I definitely don't know if today's roster limit rule is the same.
14 minus the 2 who will be out of eligibility plus the 5 signees is 17, so a limit of some kind at 15 obviously is a concern.
On scholarship limits, I believe Stanford WBB has 15 endowed scholarships. To give more (if allowed) the program would have to find additional money. Not to say that couldn't be done.
Also on the scholarship topic: (1) I recall hearing that Green (originally a walk on) only has a scholarship year by year, not guaranteed though her senior year, as WBB fan just posted. That would still leave us at 16 if everyone with eligibility returns. (2) Tara's policy was always that a 5th year isn't guaranteed to someone who redshirts. I remember Ruef was prepared to walk on for her 5th year if a scholarship hadn't opened up for her. Here too I'm sure Kate would love to bring back Harriel next year if she wants to stay and it's feasible, but for now from the fan point of view it looks doubtful.
I kind of hate discussing things like this because I want to be super careful not to offend anyone. I'd always like to see everyone back and on scholarship! At the last WBB banquet, I was seated at a table with Lauren Green and her family. She and her whole family are such sweet people!
Well said. Green has been a great teammate and even with limited playing time, she seems to have a great attitude and is beloved by her fellow teammates. I get the sense Harriel is aware and treating this as her last season at Stanford. She has had social media posts mentioning this as her senior season. If she was planning to return, I’m not sure that would be the case. Plus with todays world of the transfer portal, a spot or two could still open up after the season so you never know what could happen
