It's difficult for Stanford to compete in this environment.

Caitlin Clark says NCAA should institute a rule that all transfers have to sit out a year.  The only exception is when a coach leaves a program.  She said the transfer situation in WBB has become insane and football is even worse.

I agree.  But Caitlin spent her entire career at one school.

Too often the transfer rule has been billed as a matter of freedom of choice for the student-athlete.  But anyone who actually is involved in academic advising knows otherwise.  Every single time a student transfers it is a major disruption toward their progress toward a degree.  There is never a completely "smooth" transfer.  The fact that unlimited transfers are allowed is just confirmation that college athletics have nothing to do with the underlying purpose of colleges--educating students.  In fact, if the transfer is "completely" smooth, it simply means that academics never mattered anyway, since any academic program worth its salt requires some modicum of continuity.

Sitting out a year is NOT simply a matter of "punishing" a student-athlete for jumping ship.  It is also a way of assuring that the student gets their new academic program back on track after the disruption of transfer.  Abandoning that requirement is probably the worst feature of the new system, both from the standpoint of the student-athlete and more particularly the standpoint of serious academies like Stanford.
