I think this is one of the better theories for why we were great in the trenches during the Turley period. He might not have directly pushed PEDs, but just knowing or hinting about PEDs and looking the other way would be enough to warrant dismissal if someone complained.
That said, I believe (without hard evidence) that PED use is endemic to football and starts early. So when you're recruiting 4* and 5* kids, especially in the trenches, some of them have already done PEDs and that's part of how they achieve standout physiques and performance.
I hate to take anything away from everyone's hard work and accomplishments. By no means are all athletes juicing. But as you say, there was quite a bit of smoke around the Stanford program's use of PEDs in the early 2010s based on subsequent suspensions in the NFL and Turley's eventual suspension and dismissal.
Turley's suspension and dismissal had nothing to do with banned substances.
