Another home series this weekend as Cal comes to Sunken Diamond. The Bears are 10-10, 2-4 in the ACC, & 3-3 on the road. Stanford leads the all-time series 221-116-1.
Cal went 1-2 both at Duke and at home vs. UVa. They won both Friday games with sterling performances by Austin Turkington on the mound. In the 2 games, the junior from Bellarmine pitched 13.2 innings (including a 7 inning complete game run rule win at Duke), gave up 2 runs (both earned) on 6 hits, 5 BBs, & 4 HBPs. He struck out 17. Gavin Eddy (redshirt freshman, 1.52 ERA, 1.01 WHIP) pitched well in both Saturday games, but was let down by lack of run support at Duke and by the bullpen in both games - especially last weekend when Cal took a 7-2 lead into the top of the 9th, only to lose 10-8. Ethan Foley (sophomore out of Ohlone College) is 2-1 in 5 starts, but has only pitched 16.1 innings. He did not take the loss at Duke, but got roughed up for 7 runs (4 earned) in the 2nd inning vs. UVa.
Cade Campbell (Jr 3B) leads the offense - .417/.425/.738, 6 HR, 24 RBI. The middle infield features a pair of local sophomores - 2B Jarren Advincula from Mitty & SS PJ Moutzouridis from Valley Christian (former teammate of Tatum Marsh & Trevor Haskins). Both were named to the 1st team Pac-12 All Freshman team last season.
Stanford's offensive production throughout the line-up, combined with solid work from the bullpen has led to 8 comeback wins. The offense (.311/.399/.524, 7.94 runs/game) should give them an edge over Cal (.274/.354/.460, 6.85 runs/game). Stanford's 10 bullpen pitchers have combined for a 7-0 record, 6 saves, and a 3.86 ERA in 81.2 innings. Cal has used 14 arms out of the pen. They appear to have at least 4 solid options, but a lot of inconsistency. Their record is 4-6 & 4 saves with a 4.95 ERA in 111 innings. This inconsistency might be epitomized, appropriately enough for Stanford fans, by David Shaw (Sr, by way of Texas & Rice). He is 0-2 in 7 appearances, with a 5.60 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 23 Ks, 10 BBs (& 4 HBPs) in 17.2 innings.
