It does raise the question of how do you establish a walk-on program if all of your roster spots are scholarship spots. Maybe less of an issue in women's basketball, but relevant to football, where the old system allowed you to take a flyer on a walk-on who could be given a roster spot but not a scholarship and if they panned out they would earn a scholarship, and if they didn't pan out then no big deal.
It's an issue for one of my son's friends, who is a walk-on baseball player. He has been told that with the switch to roster spots, there's no room for him on the team, even though he is more productive than many scholarship players, who have been guaranteed roster spots. He has been advised to transfer to a community college for a year, and then get recruited as a roster-counting scholarship player the following year. But this is a) bad from an academic perspective and b) offers no guarantee that he would be able to transfer back. Yet another example of unintended consequences.
