That netting is new this year and is definitely intended to protect the fans from hard hit balls, not protect the players from the wall.  They even have a movable net over the right field track for members of the Gotham Club who are allowed on the right field warning track during batting practice.  Players used to be able to run into the right field corner.  I think the padding is exactly the same that was always there and is the same as the brick portions of the outfield wall.  The low wall he jumped over is also new and may be an issue for player safety but many stadiums have low walls in the corner that players need to be aware of.  Robles really ran full speed and jumped into the air with complete reckless abandon.  None of the stadium netting is designed to absorb that kind of impact.  Players are obviously learning the new aspects of the park this year, but I don't think our players will be jumping into the netting like they are in a bounce house or netted trampoline.  Still, it would probably be better if they attached the netting to the side of the wall without the low wall.  I hope Robles recovers quickly.  It's a bummer that everyone will probably learn from his injury.
