Would you start him over Bailey?
I wouldn’t.
Of course not. Not even close. I would, however, start him over Huff. Don't forget, Bailey breaks down easily and quickly with hard use. And I would maybe start him over Flores at DH and at PH. He would have the best on-base percentage, the second-best batting average and the third best OPS on the team. I think we could find a spot for him.
I doubt Bart would be hitting as well if he was a #2. I think he needs to play regularly to be effective. And I definitely would not put him in the lineup in place of Flores. Wilmer has been a key to SF’s early success.
As I wrote at the time of his trade, it was the best thing for both the Giants and Bart to give him a fresh start somewhere else. He never would have achieved his goals had he stayed in San Francisco.
The issue is not whether he would’ve put up the numbers he did at Pittsburgh. Or even the numbers he’s putting up now at Pittsburgh. He would only be playing sporadically – primarily against left-handed pitching. So obviously the numbers wouldn’t be the same. The issue is would he be a better backup to Bailey than anything the Giants have. And the answer to that is a resounding yes.
They gave Tom Murphy $8 million over two years. Right now he’s hanging out somewhere with Waldo.
