Giants acquiring Devers from Red Sox.

Great trade in my opinion. Giants take on Devers, one of the best bats in major league baseball, All Star three of the last four years, down ballot MVP votes each of the last four years. Led league with 54 doubles in 2019. They also take on all $250 million of Devers' contract.
Devers leads the AL in walks with 55, his splits are .271/.400/.494/.894 this season and .279/.349/509/.858 overall. WAR of 3.6, 4.5, 3.5 and 3.7 the last four years. 3x 100 RBI years, scored 100+ two years.
Giants traded Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs, Jose Bello and Jordan Hicks. Tibbs was their first round draft pick (#13 overall) now batting .245 in high A. Jose Bello is 20 and starting his third season in rookie ball, hasn't gone to high or low A yet. Jordan Hicks has a 6.47 ERA this year with a 1.541 WHIP and a $44 million, 4 year contract. Failed starter. Harrison has a 4.73 career ERA, and a 4.56 ERA this year. He's only 23. He's the "star" of the deal. He's 39-35 overall, 1.297 career WHIP.
Potential Problems
This was partly a salary dump by the Red Sox, and partly getting rid of a disgruntled player. This is the issue with Devers...he led all AL third basemen in errors every year between 2019 and 2024. This dude cannot field the hot corner. So he should really be the DH. Also, he's 6', 235 pounds, somewhat Panda-shaped.
Chapman eliminates any need to worry about him playing 3B. I foresee him playing as the DH in the long run. In the short term, 1B.
The least of my concerns is his attitude. The Red Sox weren’t honest with him. That is a non-issue in an organization that is led by a future Hall of Famer with three rings. Posey understands the importance of straight talk with the players.
The trade doesn’t change my opinion of Harrison. I still think he will be a star. However, the Giants are deep in young pitching and had to part with someone of value to get a player like Devers. I wish Kyle the best. As for Hicks, the promises he received from SF (under Zaidi) are now extinct. I think his starting days are over. If he embraces the reliever role, he has a chance to really help Boston.
Tibbs has been on the upswing over the last month. Like any prospect, no one can say with unquestioned authority that he will become a regular in the bigs. Time will tell.
Overall, I am excited to have an executive in charge who isn’t afraid of sticking his neck out in an effort to make the team better (especially at the cost of $250 million-plus).
