Separate topic, the Giants inability to score runs.
Let's talk about Donnie Ecker. He was the hitting coach for the Giants for the COVID season (2020) and their incredible 2021 season. When Bochy left, Ecker was one of the first guys they hired. He was hired as bench coach and offensive coordinator.
Here’s what’s interesting. Here’s the SFG and Rangers' performance in “runs per game” for the years prior to, during and after Ecker, measured in rank among 30 MLB teams and runs per game:
Giants
2019 28th (4.19 rpg, pre-Ecker)
2020 8th (4.98 rpg, first year of Ecker)
2021 6th (4.96 rpg, second and last year of Ecker)
2022 11th (4.42 rpg, first year post-Ecker)
2023 24th (4.16 rpg, second year post-Ecker)
2024 17th (4.28 rpg, third year post Ecker, first year Burrell started coaching)
2025 25th (4.24 rpg, fourth year post-Ecker, having added Reaves, Chapman and Adames)
Rangers
2021 28th (3.86 rpg, pre-Ecker)
2022 12th (4.36 rpg, first year of Ecker)
2023 3rd (5.44 rpg, second year of Ecker)
2024 18th (4.22 rpg, third year of Ecker)
2025 28th (3.64 rpg, first year post-Ecker)
To me, the evidence is clear. Ecker is an excellent hitting instructor.
Ecker is currently unemployed.
I know a team that could really, really use him.
