Hmm... Athletics was not mentioned as one of the areas getting hit. (That doesn't mean it wasn't hit, just that it wasn't mentioned.)
The article says "increased Stanford’s endowment tax from 1.4% to 8%"

Stanford Daily indicates "As of August 2024, Stanford’s endowment totaled $37.6 billion, with an annual payout of about $1.8 billion." Stanford indicates 7554 undergrads + 9915 grads (Fall 2024) = 17,469 students. Adding 8% more students (ie 1,331) would get to 18,800 students and Stanford would be in the 4% bracket, saving $1.8 billion * 4% = $72 million (about $54,000 per added student).
Granted, I don't know where they would put them on the main campus, it would seem Stanford could swallow up some small school and campus.
Another way to increase the student population is for students to (opt to) stay an extra year.
well the plan for the incoming frosh class is to be +150 from previous undergrad classes which over 4 years would be 600 students

and they did look at buying Notre Dame in Belmont but backed out

I would guess they will do some serious accounting looking at the valuation of endowment investments to get to the 4% tax rate
They can direct new giving to current operations rather than to the endowment. Since the university would be paying tax currently on the income from endowment gifts, it could be more tax-efficient for the big donors to hold onto their money until the university was ready to spend it.

Vice Provost for Student Affairs Michele Rasmussen is on the committee investigating the proposed increase in undergraduate enrollment. In the alumni Zoom session today on student life, she made the point that housing was a key factor in the analysis. In her comments, she threw out percentage increases of 15%, 30%, and 50%. I wouldn't put much significance in those particular percentages, but they are not just looking at 150 more here and 150 more there.
