While I feel for anyone who has lost their job, universities, Stanford included, have become bloated administrative messes. 

Over 40 years in the US, student enrollment went up by 78%. Faculty increased by 92%. Admin/non faculty employees went up 452%. 

There are a variety of factors contributing to this, many out of the university's control, but a disturbing trend nonetheless. 

A similar issue plagues my field (medicine) where for every doc or front line nurse there seem to be 4 people whose only job is to make sure metrics are met and hoops are jumped through.
