One would think that a dollar donated to do cancer research at Stanford would be better well spent than a dollar donated to Oregon to do the same. Apparently that's not the case anymore. Have the mighty fallen THAT far?

Why would one think that? There are great researchers at Stanford. There are undoubtedly some great researchers at Oregon. Oregon might have proposed a program that appeals to Knight more than anything Stanford proposed. Supporting a "new" program can be even more effective than maintaining an existing one. Even if all other things are "equal", Stanford's overhead rate (54%) is higher than Oregon's (47.5%). One can argue the "bang for the buck" is actually better there than at Stanford.
