I don't need to know the details of the injury. What I'm more interested in is when the athlete is expected to be back if at all..."undisclosed injury that is expected to keep X away from the field/court/track until early October" would do.

I was similarly talking about general comments on player availability, which I didn't think was covered by student/medical privacy laws. All of the Big 4, for example, affirmatively require the disclosure of player availability reports for at least some sports.  Last month the ACC issued an availability mandate for conference football, baseball, and men's and women's basketball games:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOHyGSorZbY  Commissioner Phillips says in the video that the intent, in part, is to safeguard students from harassment by people seeking info.  Though, as Jamesy noted, that concern is related to those who want the info for gambling purposes. I follow Stanford sports closely enough that I care about how individual athletes are doing. But the athletes and coaches certainly don't owe me anything.
