- If the coach is not sure about which is better, splitting allows the coach more time to watch each of them under game conditions.
- If the two are about equal in ability, it keeps both reasonably happy (reducing chance of transfer)
- Redundancy in the (unlikely) chance of injury, illness, or transfer
- Motivation for each with each wanting to be better than the other
