Starting Outfield, All Three Age 25 or Younger: Fewest games since 1980. Here's the bottom five in MLB:
Braves, 38
Brewers, 36
Mets, 23
Yankees, 21
Giants, 2
That's right, two (2). And it just happened. Ramos is 25, Gilbert was 24, Matos is 23.
Mick, do you know how old the Mathews/Maddox/Bonds OF was?
Bonds was 26 when Matthews and Maddox made their debut in 1972.
The next season, Mathews, Maddox and Gary Thomasson started on August 31, 1973 versus the Phillies. Bobby Bonds played 160 games that year (it was his 39 HR/43 SB season). Thomasson was just 21 that season. Like Mathews and Maddox, he was a Southern California high school outfielder drafted by the Giants. Thomasson played 112 games that season, not bad for a kid. As of that game, Maddox was hitting .311, Matthews was hitting .306 and Thomasson was hitting .276. Bonds was at .304, Goodson was at .301, McCovey hit .261 but his OPS was .963. Fuentes was .275.
