Don't blame yourself. Somebody should hang that DJ. The key to music at a wedding is cross-generational appeal. Play the oldies that the kids love and the new songs that the older ears will find appealing. I gave our wedding DJ a pre-approved long list of songs with his discreiton in terms of which ones to play and when. He got my grandmother dancing.
In terms of becoming current, start with whatever genre you love and listen to the newer artists working that idiom and broaden from there.
