If Belichick leaves of his own accord, he owes UNC $1M, and apparently he's willing to do that if he can find a "soft landing" with another team or media.  UNC might be able to terminate him for cause given the developing story behind recruiting violations and what other fire might be causing the smoke.  I'm sure UNC would love to recoup $1M and be done with a contract that made Belichick the ninth-highest paid college coach.
