Recipe for success in 2026:

My thoughts on your thoughts:
1. Acquire two mid-rotation starting pitchers. Webb, Ray are locks as the 1 and 2 and a healthy Roupp is a solid 5.  SF needs a 3 and 4 who can eat a lot of innings.  They have assets (e.g., Ramos) that can be moved - make it so, Buster.  Roupp had the #70 xwOBA and  #53 ERA in all of baseball. I'd say he's closer to a #3 starter than a #5 starter. But we need the two best starters we can afford. And what about Verlander? When he started going majority off-speed, he went from a 4.44 ERA to a 2.70 ERA (which would have been #13 in MLB). I'd like to keep him if we could. It wouldn't break my heart if we traded Gold Glover Bailey or former All-Star Ramos for one...although Ramos is only going to be 26. Maybe keep him.

2.  Rebuild the bullpen.  There will be a lot of pitchers looking for jobs this winter.  Figure out which one’s are a good fit and sign them.  The secret to the success of the three WS wins was the Core 4 - none of them were “sure things” when they arrived in SF but they meshed and became an integral part of the team’s success.  Find a new set of relief pitchers who can work together effectively.  They were #7 in MLB in relief pitching WAR. Toughest think will be to find a closer, and I think it's going to be Peguero. 

3. Improve the defense and team speed.  Yep, this is a cut and paste that we have put on our postseason “to do” list for the last several years.  Maybe this time………would love it, but...Devers, Adames, Eldridge, Encarnacion, Smith, Fitzpatrick, Chapman, Ramos just aren't that fast, and neither is "Grandson of the Light Breeze" J. H. Lee.

4. Find a 2B who can field the position and consistently get on base ahead of the core hitters.  Yes, this is a very tall order…Unless he comes through trade, I just don't see it. The FAs aren't any better than Koss or Schmitt, except maybe Gleyber Torres....and he wants a multi-year deal. Castro, Moore, Rosario and Frazier aren't as good.

5. Get Eldridge up to speed as quickly as possible. Adding him to Devers, Chapman, Adames would give SF a formidable middle of the line up.  Ramos, 21 home runs. Schmitt had 12 in 95 games, Fitz had 4 in 72 games and Koss had 3 in 74 games (they can go quietly)

6. Matos is only 23. Give him a full year in RF. Otherwise, get Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger in RF.

7. Maybe get Yaz and/or Rogers back. 

8. Get a new hitting coach with the new manager, re-learn how to do the little things well.

Incidentally, the Giants will do very well in arbitration. Highest projected isRyan Walker at $2.5 million, then Bailey at $2.2 million.


There you go.  Let’s revisit this in February to see how many boxes were checked…..

One of the few things that is a 99.9% lock is Bailey will be the Giants’ #1 catcher next year.  He is a top candidate for the Platinum Glove this year (the best defender, regardless of position, in MLB).  Posey knows the value of a premier defender behind the plate.  Bailey can hit .230 and still be a big plus for the team. 

Otherwise, no to Yaz and Verlander, the team needs to move forward with younger guys and no to Tucker/Bellinger (too expensive) and no to Matos, gambling that he will suddenly find his way is too much of a risk - there are better choices out there and, lastly, trade Ramos and his Dr. Strangeglove to any taker…
