Sunday, Fun day...
- Rumor is that POsey thinks the Giants lack confidence and he wants a big personality as their manager.
- Vitello has a $3 million buyout at Tennessee. And if Craig Counsell makes $40 mms. in five years, what do you pay Vitello?
- Rumors that Atlanta might be interested in Vitello as well.
- I've been thinking for quite a while that the Giants underperform with the talent they have and need someone to get more and better results. But a college coach?
- I hope the new coach knows how stolen bases work...
- Fun fact: Vitello was the associate head coach of the Salinas Packers in 2002. They finished 50-14.
- Curious to know who Vitello would select as bench/3B/1B/hitting/pitching coaches. Maybe keep Hallberg as bench coach. Jayce Tingler, bench coach for Minnesota, fluent Spanish speaker, is a close friend of Vitello's and managed San Diego from 2020 to 2021. Brandon Hyde, managed the Orioles, from Santa Rosa, fired as Manager of Orioles in May. Won 101 games in 2023, 91 in 2024. Vance Wilson, 3B coach of Royals.
- I realize the Giants have some big egos on the team. So do college teams...
- This is extremely high-risk, high-reward. Like hiring a former star ballplayer with no executive experience as team president.
- Apropos of nothing: the model from-college-to-MLB manager, Pat Murphy from Arizona State, just watched his 97-win Brewers have the fewest hits of any span of six games in the postseason -- ever -- with just 23 hits. And it's not close...the next worst were the 2022 Yankees (29, lost the ALCS) and 2017 Cubs (29, lost the NLDS). and the 1974 A's (won the WS, and five of the six games in that span)
- Jung Hoo Lee has an opt-out after 2027 (Year Four) of his deal. If he opts in, he gets $20.5 million in both 2028 and 2029. Hopefully, his stamina picks up. He hit .319 for the first month of the season.
- Based upon top to bottom salary expectations, the Giants have $184.4 million committed against the Competitive Balance Tax.(CBT). The CBT threshold is $244 million, so the Giants have almost $60 million to play with.
