So, is everyone here going to be a Jays fan for the World Series?

Murphy was Milwaukee’s bench coach for eight prior to becoming their manager.  No one has ever gone directly from college head coach to MLB field manager (until now?).  

My thoughts - why not?  If he could simply get the players to focus on their job while they are on the field, it would be a major step forward.  Too many times, we saw fundamental mistakes by the Giants; errors of omission and commission.  Clean those up, add Max Scherzer, a fiery competitor and good friend of Vitello (per The Athletic), another starting pitcher and some bullpen arms and suddenly you have a serious wild card contender.  

Easy peasy…..

He makes $3 million/year at Tenn. (a no income tax state) plus a $3 million buyout if he leaves the Vols.  That adds up to a pricey payout by SF.  
 
Just guessing…

$3.5 million/year on a four year contract plus a one time $3 million charge for the buyout plus additional monies (10%) to cover the difference in state taxes. 

That equals $18.4 million ($14M + $3M + $1.4M).  

That would put Vitello in the top seven* of current major league managers.  I’m guessing that is what they are talking about at this point.

* Roberts, Counsell, Cora, Lovullo, Boone, Vogt are the Top 6.

Could it also be possible that certain highly placed players communicated their extreme lack of interest in working for a manager who's never coached in MLB before? No inside information, just spitballing...But if I'm Devers or Chapman or Adames or Webb, do I want to work for that guy? Judging from the reception Gilbert receives (one of Vitello's players), it wouldn't surprise me. Just sayin'...

Interesting aside...the stadium in Tennessee is Lindsay Nelson stadium, named after the former SF Giants announcer (1979 - 1981). He was born & raised in Tennessee, graduated from Tennessee, lived there in the off season.

They are professionals.  They just want to win.  Vitello will be judged on his ability to communicate his vision to the players.  No B.S. just a clear definition of the role each player will be expected to play.
