Regarding Scherzer the FA openings begin  5 days after WS ends.

It would be funny.  First Verlander.  Then Scherzer.  What next? Doug Fister?

In the last year of Buster's career -- the second year that Kapler managed, Posey had skipped the previous COVID season -- 34-year-old Buster Posey had his highest OPS+ season in seven years, and the third highest OBP of his career, second highest overall OPS of his career. Kapler had brought in coaches with interesting and innovative concepts. For instance, they had Buster batting left-handed in the cage to develop swing speed.

Buster called Vitello, 47, "one of the brightest, most innovative and most respected coaches in college baseball" and said that his "commitment to developing players stood out." 

Bright and innovative. As Alex Pavlovic says in the linked article, it's a big leap of faith. He mentions that Vitello might find some interesting fixes, pre-game adjustments just as Kapler and his young/inexperienced staff did in 2021. Pavlovic says that If Kapler were given the chance to hire a manager, it might be Vitello, or someone like him. Pavlovic goes on to say that the Giants realized that they let some of Kapler's talent get away when Farhan cleaned house:

- Kai Correa, now bench coach of the New York Mets.
- Craig Albernaz, associate manager (promoted) working as Steven Vogt's #2 in Cleveland, AL Central champs in 2025.
- Donnie Ecker helped the Texas Rangers win a title as hitting coach. Texas went from #20 to #2 in team OPS+ that year.
- Antoan Richardson got credit for helping Juan Soto steal 38 bases.

It never made sense to me that you just dump the people from a 107-win season. Forget about Kapler, he had a talented staff. I think, and Pavlovic clearly thinks that Posey saw how the game evolved, and with Vitello, he's taking the next step.

The two coaches before Vitello finished 5th, 6th or 7th in the SEC East every year from 2008 to 2017. Vitello took over, and went 6th, then 3rd (with their first 40 win season in 14 years), then 15-2 in the COVID season, then won 50, 58, 44, and 60 games, taking the national championship in 2024 and was SEC champs in 2022 and 2024.

I'm excited about this season. There will be some bumps, for sure, but I think they could achieve great things.
