His was far from the only failure.  The sad thing is, they were so close to not only beating the Dodgers, but for Blake Snell being a losing pitcher in three World Series games. Which may have been a record. Snell is my second least favorite Ex-Giant of all time. Bobby Murcer  is easily number one. Murcer  once famously made the comment “I never played for the Giants.”  But actually, it’s Snell that should’ve made the comment. Because he never did play for the Giants. He played solely for a contract. The one happy thing I’ll take  out of the World Series is that he stunk.

Murcer was both a testy creep and preferred to remain a Yankee. He fought against playing RF for the Yankees, then told Gabe Paul he could accept playing RF if it meant he could be a lifelong Yankee, Paul said there was no way he would be traded, then three days later he was traded to San Francisco.

He did well as a Giant, made the All Star team, but his power was noticeably dwindling and he only hit 11 HRs during his second SF season. Of his three teams (NYY, Cubs, SFG), he actually had the best stats for SF (best career BA, OBP, OPS+) and had a big raise from 1975 to 1976. At least they got Bill Madlock in exchange for Murcer and some minor leaguers. Madlock had won consecutive batting titles, and did well with the Giants.

The Giants got Portugal just as he lost his skills. He went 18-4 for Houston in 1993, then 10-8 for the Giants, his ERA ballooning from 2.77 to 3.93, although his WHIP was virtually identical, going from 1.303 to 1.311. But his home run rate tripled.
