Former World Series winning manager Joe Maddon says the quiet part out loud: Hiring Tony Vitello is an insult to all the managers and manager candidates who came up through the ranks in MLB.

I understand where Maddon is coming from, but at the same time, the Giants have (a) had a series of underperforming, old-school managers, and (b) I suspect that Buster Posey watched the games last year and thought to himself that he had a talented team who was regularly screwing up in fundamental ways, and © former college manager Pat Murphy and the guy the Giants should have hired (that's me editorializing, not Buster) Steven Vogt have each won Manager of the Year for the second year in a row. That's never been done before.
Murphy's team, the Brewers, were sound before he got there. Craig Counsell was in the playoffs five of his last six years as manager. The Brewers finished third (out of 30 MLB teams) in runs scored, third in MLB in runs allowed, and 8th in defensive Rtot. They won 97 games, most in baseball, and played sound ball behind a college manager (yes, I know Murphy had an MLB background).
I think the Giants need to get back to fundamental baseball. I think they have talent. I understand Maddon's comments, but at the same time, I want the Giants to win.
Incidentally, Maddon never played above A ball. His last season was with the Santa Clara Padres, a team that existed for the single year that there was no San Jose minor league team. They finished 47-93.
