I liked this line from Cavalli's piece:

I was on the search committee and cast the deciding vote to hire Walsh, who won by one vote over Paul Hackett. The others who voted for Bill could make the same claim, of course, but since I'm the only one still living, I'll claim the distinction.

I found this interesting as well.  I'm an old fan.  I remember, right after Jack Christiansen was fired in 1976, that Paul Hackett was high on my list.  My rationale was what Hackett did with USC's QB at the time, Vince Evans.  Evans had a completion percentage of 31% in 1975 (you can Google it if you don't believe me).  Hackett turned Evans into a high draft pick and NFL starter.  Of course, I had no idea who Bill Walsh was in 1976.  It's amazing to think how the fortunes of Stanford football could have changed with one vote.

The selection of Bill Walsh may not have happen if Paul Brown and Bengals had promoted him from Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach, when that did not happen Walsh was off to San Diego as an assistant coach.
