I think it says that unless he was dying to go specifically to Minnesota, none of the other programs who are looking for a DC thought he was good enough to be a DC.
The fact that he took a demotion tells me that either he really thinks the situation at Stanford with the new guy is intolerable or (more likely) that he was let go. Given that it is not uncommon for a new coach to want to bring in mostly his own coordinators (save typically one coach for continuity), I don’t necessarily read too much into the fact that he’s no longer with the team. What I did read into was that he couldn’t land a DC position somewhere.
