I think the trade was just intended to dump Hield's salary for next year in return for an expiring contract. I doubt there's much confidence that Porzingis will help the team a lot. The Warriors are already out of the running for this year because of Butler's ACL. Next year, they'll owe ~150mm to an ancient core (Curry, Butler, Green). Though they'll have a couple of young role players who they got for decent value in the draft (Moody, Podz), they'll have no stars anywhere near their prime. I don't see Melton choosing to return to that roster for cheap. The "two timeline" thing didn't work out, and it's time to rebuild. Fortunately, the Warriors have all their own first round picks except for one top-20 protected pick in 2030, so the rebuild is feasible.
