You wrote that you're not sure how Stanford could have hired someone other than KP, given her tenure. Well, an associate head coach with years sitting next to the head coach doesn't have a right to be given the job, and, empirically, not all head coaches are named head coach when the former head steps down. Perhaps you mean that we couldn't have hired anyone else without it being perceived as a slight. That may be so. But I'm having trouble seeing how designating the associate head coach to be the successor without a serious search is the best thing to do for the team or the school all things considered. (Obviously it could have turned out that the associate head coach emerged from the search as the strongest candidate.)
