And I have to say that I can't see improvement from week 1 to week 7 in any areas. The weaknesses get exploited in the same way about every game. Stanford's passing game has regressed, perhaps because opponents now have plenty of game tape to scout Stanford and prepare better. Pass protection is still a problem. The run game occasionally creates a hole. But mostly they rely on the tough running of Ford for yards. The defense's struggles are well-documented. And now the kicking game seems to be struggling.
Msqueri, what do your eyes tell you and what do the numbers say? Is the team improving at all in any aspect of offense, defense or special teams? I think I read you highlighting Bryant as a player whose play has improved as the season has progressed. Anyone else?
My eyes and the numbers tell me there hasn’t been progress from last season or from the Hawaii game.
On the in-season arc, we’ve yet to have back-to-back games playing like an FBS program. Our single game scoreboard outcomes are befitting #104, #146, #146, #54, #250, #166, and #91 (chronological order). Hard to argue any improvement. If one prefers a per play measure, our net yards per play relative to opponent have been +1.2, -0.20, -1.49, +1.18, -2.98, -1.53, FCS.
From season to season, our trajectory is Sagarin #78 to #99 (NWO median #89), SP+ #112 to #113 (NWO median #104), and FEI #84 to #103 (NWO median #85). We are worse through seven games than we’ve tended to be on median the last half decade. The last half decade was already the worst in power football.
The offense is currently the worst it’s been according to both FEI and SP+ during this miserable era. The defense is at least so far a bit better than 2023. It’s still in play for this to be our worst team of the era in the major respects.
For what it’s worth, I’m a skeptic of in-season improvement narratives. Generally I think offseasons are the time for improvement, if it’s going to happen at all. Either way, this is a competition and our opponents are trying to improve just like we are. Generally speaking, regression is as likely as improvement.
Don’t see how anybody can argue the team has shown improvement.
