The first half vs UCLA was close. Repeatedly, Stanford scored a goal and UCLA answered to tie the game. The first half ended 5-4 with Stanford in the iead.
Stanford started well in the Q3, scoring the first 3 goals to take an 8-4 lead. But #1 UCLA came back with the next 3 to make it a close 8-7 before the end of the 3rd. Was Stanford tired? Personally, I felt the calls were going (relatively) against Stanford.
The teams battled but couldn't change the 8-7 score for more than half of Q3. Finally, Stanford scored to give a 2 goal cushion. Then with 1:18 to go, Stanford put the game out of reach by going ahead 10-7. With a 30-second shot clock, Stanford only needed to hold the ball when it got possession. As it turns out, UCLA did get a goal and Stanford had an empty-net goal, making the final score 11-8.
Cal beat USC today 18-11. I imagine the next ranking will have
#1 Stanford (17-2, 4-1 MPSF)
#2 Cal (14-4, 3-2)
#3 UCLA (17-3, 2-3)
#4 USC (14-5, 1-4) but maybe they will be #5
#5 Fordham (23-1, 12-0 MAWPC)
Fordham will play at Stanford next Sunday after playing at Cal on Saturday. Their loss was 11-16 vs UCLA. Their best wins were over #6 teams.
How does Fordham manage to do well in water polo: their 24-person roster has 6 Californians and 18 from foreign countries.
For comparison, Stanford's 25-person roster has 14 Californians, 4 others from the US, 7 from foreign countries. Stanford's foreign athletes comprise much of the main players.)
Cal will be at Stanford Friday the 13th of November.
