Here is a Stanford Mag article with some of the history of the restrictions against alcohol surrounding campus:

The coffee house in Tressider has also sold beer and wine to consume on premises for several years, as have other places on campus.  At least as far back as 1980, students of legal age could buy beer at a bar at Encina Commons.
