Hello happy denizens of the CardBoard!

I know you all love Stanford and Stanford Athletics as much as I do, so I wanted to let you know that the celebration of Stanford's Day of Giving STARTS TOMORROW (Wednesday, May 13 at 5:00am PT)! I hope you'll join the Stanford community again for a 36-hour celebration of what can happen when generosity meets possibility. It's been exciting to see so many in the athletic and greater Stanford community giving back. Visit Stanford Day of Giving Information to learn more.

The Stanford Day of Giving is a great day to support specific areas of the university that are meaningful to you: gifts up to $5,000 will be matched dollar for dollar until 5:00pm PT on Thursday, May 14 (or until matching funds run out). There are also lots of fun challenges and leaderboards to unlock addition matching funds!

I will be making gifts to support several Stanford athletic teams. Will you join me by making your own gift at Stanford Day of Giving Link to support the people and programs you care about at Stanford?

Per GoStanford, seven LSJU alums are in the WNBA to start the 2026 season, incl some familiar faces in new places (the ageless Ogwumike, now in LA; Alanna Smith on the touted Dallas team with Bueckers and Ogunbuwale et al.; Haley Jones with expansion Portland). There's also former LSJU players Carrington who is now on Chicago, Iriafen and Betts.

I saw that Lexie Hull got only ~ 15 minutes in the Fever opener. With Clark and Cunningham back from injury, and super scorer Mitchell, it's a crowded backcourt. But Hull does have her own t-shirt on BreakingT, a sure sign of stardom :--)
In this academic year alone, interscholastic officials have recorded 7,028 athletic transfers, up from 5,688 last year. Elite football players commonly pass through two or three schools and some students transfer eight times, according to a top regulator.

Apparently, what they are not chasing, is an education. Someone please make this stop. Many (probably most) of these kids will not, for one reason or another, ever make enough money from NIL or professional leagues to make a living. And in the meantime, I have a hard time believing that a kid who went through three high schools in four years, then a handful of colleges thereafter, will produce any kind of meaningful education that prepares them for a life that doesn’t involve a ball.

What’s going on in college is bad enough, but the sports-industrial compex reaching into high school is a travesty.

ESPN recently released a ranking of offseasons for all 68 Power 4 (plus Notre Dame) teams, by conference. Here are the ACC rankings:
1. Miami (no. 2 overall)
2. SMU
3. Cal
4. Louisville
5. Va Tech
6. Virginia
7. Pitt
8. Georgia Tech
9. Florida State
10. NC State
11. Clemson
12. Duke
13. Wake Forest
14. Syracuse
15. North Carolina
16. Boston College
17. Stanford

For overall rankings, ESPN only provided a top 10. Miami was the only ACC team in that group. Stanford nonconference opponent Notre Dame is no. 9 overall.

Note that this is not exactly a prediction of how teams will finish, but more a reflection of how the offseason has gone to this point. The criteria were:

Roster additions through the portal and the high school ranks

Retention of top players who could leave for the NFL draft or the portal

Coaching staff continuity or key additions/upgrades

Amongst the comments about Stanford:

Quote:What went wrong: Luck worked quickly to land Pritchard in November, but Stanford was slow with its coordinator moves, particularly Richard, who wasn't hired until late February. The Cardinal underwent a nearly complete overhaul on offense, led by the graduations of leading pass catchers Williams and Roush and the portal departures of running back Cole Tabb (Cincinnati) and offensive guard Emeka Ugorji, who started eight games as a true freshman last fall before transferring to Florida.

Quote:What went right: Michigan transfer Davis Warren, a nine-game starter for the Wolverines in 2024, brings needed experience to the Cardinal quarterbacks room. He'll benefit from the return of leading rusher Micah Ford and the arrival of Brown, a Yale transfer who hauled in 71 passes for 1,085 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall. Stanford also dipped into the Ivy League ranks to replace Ugorji with Kilstrom, a Harvard transfer. All-ACC linebacker Matt Rose marked a critical piece of retention for Pritchard & Co.

from today's zoom session with Jon Levin in a staff response to an question submitted during the call

"We will be announcing a "Stanford Alumni Summer Session" series this summer. During that series, AD John Donahoe will join us to talk through the extensive athletics strategy. That invite wi;; be in your email later this month"

will be interesting to see if any real info is revealed....

Levin was also supportive of athletics in general but did again say (my paraphrase) "the AD has to get back to self funding"

This is ridiculous. I think I could keep pace for maybe 100 m. I’ve run one marathon in my life, and let’s just say that they’d have been done before I hit the halfway point.
