They trailed 48-17 at the time, Kevin Hogan and Christian McCaffrey had long since departed for the bench, and Stanford had scored on nine consecutive possessions, but hey, it counted.
We logged 570 yards of total offense despite playing with second-stringers for nearly the entire fourth quarter. Otherwise, we might have broken 80. During most of the third quarter, every Stanford running play looked like it was about one step of breaking free for a touchdown. And sometimes less than one: Barry Sanders took off around right tackle for a 65-yard TD with 1:25 left in the quarter. (I cracked up at the drive statistics the Pac-12 Network flashed on the screen: one play, 18, seconds, 65 yards.)
We averaged 8.3 yards a snap. Kevin Hogan was 17 of 19 for 217 and two touchdowns, yet his 220.1 QB rating was only second-best on the team. Keller Chryst, when he wasn't pancaking Arizona DBs, rolled up a 264.4 rating on four for four passing for 39 yards and a TD. (Ryan Burns got in the game, too, though it was too far gone for David Shaw to allow him to pass.)
I think it's going to be a long season for Arizona if Anu Solomon can't come back quickly. (He didn't even make the trip.) Jerrard Randall -- though he finished with 178 yards passing, a figure inflated by a meaningless drive at the end of the third quarter when the game was out of reach -- has too much of a scattershot arm for anybody to respect. He made some nice throws, but he missed a lot of others, including two deep ones that were certain TDs and several short ones that should have been slam dunks.
So, we're off until the UCLA game, 12 days from now. By that time, we might have Hogan back to something close to 100 percent. Or, as Shaw might say, he will no longer have "pretty good coloration" on his ankle, which is apparently millenial coach-speak for "bruise," if the TV guys are to be believed. Question: Do we want that? He's barely practiced for the past two games while going a combined 26 of 33 for four touchdowns and 380 yards and just one interception. Maybe he should just go to class the rest of the quarter and show up only at game time?
Just go to class, Kevin, relax, and wear the VR headset to bed.
