At least USC is not listed as under Stanford's control (again). THAT would be embarrassing. But what is with the dollar sign? Stanford isn't exactly cheap.

I find this annoying because it doesn't actually reflect any aspect of Stanford fandom. I will manually type out U.$.C., Notre Shame, Notre Lame, University of South Bend, kal, toejamz, bezerkeley, etc. as long as I can do so.

To the extent that the members have any say on this matter, I agree with the others and I would strongly prefer that the word substitutions be removed.
I will try to make my case.
To my understanding, this website began an impressive 15 or so years ago. When I try to figure out why these word substitutions exist, the best explanation I can guess is that online culture and standards have evolved in a way over that time to make these substitutions inappropriate today.
1) I can see forced word substitutions being more appropriate in a smaller, closed group. But the ©ardboard has become the largest and de facto most "official" community of Stanford athletics fans to my knowledge. It's in the Big Leagues now, as is Stanford football. Enforced nick names are better suited for smaller, and I would argue, less-welcoming, clans, like fraternities.
2) Second, I think fan groups, fan culture, and even sports practical jokes have changed. I remember we used to throw frozen fruit at each other during Big Game. I think it was in 1990 that a slingshot orange, I believe, made the conductor for the (B)ekerley band fall off his ladder. As awesome as that was, if somebody showed up today with a slingshot and a backpack full of frozen fruit, I would view it as inappropriate today. Also impossible to get inside using a puny, see-through bag.
3) I think reasons (1) and (2), continuing to today, reflect poorly on the university, especially because newcomers would be unaware that these are pranks with a long (dated) history.
4) I look back on the 90s and 2000s and think how much the web has evolved and how murky and formless things were at first. There weren't rules and user and community expectations like there are today. You used to have websites that'd make you watch a 30 second Shockwave animation before you could get the home page. You used to you have websites with white text on a black background because they were edgy and artsy! Today, users have certain expectations based on standards that have evolved, and one of those expectations is that they will be able to express themselves and their perspectives using the language of their choosing. I think people understand communities can be moderated -- so posts can be removed, users can be suspended, and users can be deleted -- but I think today users have the expectation that their words, if not deleted, are theirs, and will reflect what they typed.
I'm very grateful this website exists. It's a wonderful resource, and I know it must've taken enormous dedication to take it where it is today. I think proprietors and creators should get some leeway and flexibility with their creations -- the creations are *their* babies, after all.

I always viewed that as inappropriate and juvenile, even when I was a juvenile. And, freezing the fruit proves intent to injure. I was not aware that Stanford students did any of the fruit throwing, other than the lacrosse team fielding the missiles and flinging them off the field. BTW, would it have been "awesome" if the Cal conductor would have injured himself falling off the ladder?

Yes agreed, fans should not throw fruit onto the field.
But going back to the original thread, um, does this mean no more discussion about ending the text substitutions of cal, notre dame, usc, etc.?
