Perez was decent against SDSU with 5 tackles . . .
Paaaleeezze. Look at the SDSU game again. He's lost out there. His tackles were on plays he was pursuing and someone else missed a tackle. When they run at him, he gets blocked. When they run a receiver through his zone, he's not there. Good linebackers take on blockers and make tackles. Good linebackers get penetration and meet ball carriers at or before the line of scrimmage. Good linebackers cover backs coming out of the backfield on pass plays.
I have yet to see him execute proper technique for his position. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a good student, but we are in trouble if he starts at ILB. UCLA will run right at him or drag a TE into his zone and kill us all night long.

Then we are in trouble, because Perez is starting, apparently, unless Alfieri recovers sufficiently. I'm not sure why Kevin Palma isn't moved over to start, instead of backing up Okereke. I guess the coaches saw some good things in the play of Perez that you didn't.Â
