Stanford-SDSU Depth Chart
08-26-2018, 06:03 PM
Of note on the OL
- Burkett not listed despite practicing last couple days. True frosh Dalman to start
- Hamilton OR Sarrell at LG, Fanaika 3rd string. Hamilton & Sarrell listed as backups at other positions will see a lot of snaps I'm guessing

Notables:
- Dalman starting C with Burkett injured
- Holder OR Murphy at CB, opposite Adebo
- St. Brown ahead of Stewart already at WR
- Hamilton OR Sarell at LG, but I think there will be some rotations to get Fanaika in there too
- No Perez, Robinson, Antoine, Simmons (Robinson for sure is due to injury keeping him out of camp, unsure about the rest?)
- 2 true frosh: Michael Wilson WR and Thomas Booker DE
- 2 walk-ons: Dylan Boles DE (over Thomas Schaffer...) and Noah Williams SS (over Simmons, who I have to think is injured)
EDIT: Sorry for overlapping you Winflop, was typing this while you posted :)

Without question, the new player I'm most interested in seeing is Osiris St. Brown. Seeing that he's jumped Stewart on the depth chart only piques my interest more. The offense already has the potential to be prolific; if St. Brown can emerge as a playmaking wide receiver who stretches the field, watch out.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

One other true frosh and walk-on. Kyle Petrucci is listed as backup LS. (Not that there are any options.)

And fortunately he has some All-American caliber players near him which may cover for any rookie mistakes.

By my order of importance...
Defensive Line
Awesome! The DL depth chart is EXACTLY as I thought it would be going into August.
Most interested to see is how much Stanford plays say Williams, DWP, and Peek together, because the starters are kinda light, which doesn't bode well for strong run defense. Compare Cal and Washington's 3-4 DL to Stanford's in terms of size and it's a bit concerning.
Offensive Line
The signals have suggested they would let Dalman get some reps vs. SDSU and bring Burkett back for USC, so that seems confirmed.
If they have put Sarell ahead of Fanaika at LG, it suggests to me, Sarell is ultimately going to be the starting LG this year.
Linebacker
We will see a lot of Gabe Reid.
Pryts has supplanted Perez, so that's probably a good thing for all the Perez haters out there.
Wide Receiver
Biggest surprises here: St. Brown over Stewart and Wilson over Fehoko.
It's always a good sign when younger players supplant older and more experienced guys in the case of St. Brown over Stewart, but Wilson being ahead of Fehoko is a little surprising. Perhaps Fehoko is a bit dinged up?
Cornerback
No worries here. Looks like a solid 2-deep. Sure looks like Holder is expected to play against SDSU.
Safety
Buncom and Edwards have played a lot of football for Stanford, so if you want experience, you've got it.
Walk-on Noah Williams? Where is Brandon Simmons, a team captain?
Very curious to see Stuart Head play.
Fullback
Perhaps the most intriguing player for me to see play is Houston Heimuli. Was dynamic in Spring.
Quarterback
So much intrigue about Davis Mills. Will his talent make it hard for "Shaward" to keep him sidelined unless Costello is injured, or game is out of hand?
Running Back
Was hoping to see Justice Woods on the 2-deep, because not sure how good everyone else is after Love and Scarlett. It's possible the thinking could be that Love and Scarlett will get most of the carries by far, that Speights and Maddox are good enough in a pinch, so why play Woods right away? If he shows something special during the season they can always use him later, and he might have value on Scout team anyway.
Tight End
In a word: Ridiculous. They have someone for everything.
Specialists
Stanford's best PK and Punter at one time in a ling time, wouldn't you say?
So much for Love returning kickoffs? Don't see his name down there.

Fehoko has been on a mission the past two years while Wilson had a great Sr HS year.
Simmons has been hurt.

As true as this is, I don't remember any mention of Wilson in training camp, and do remember Fehoko being mentioned. Also think some people who saw a scrimmage mentioned Fehoko as standing out. Not completely shocked, but certainly surprised Wilson's name is on the depth chart and Fehoko's isn't.

I think that is especially poor choice of words given I believe the reason that he isn't on the depth chart is due to injury.

OF: Others have noted that DWP, Fanaika, Perez, Robinson, Antoine, and Simmons are dealing with "some issues" (injuries), which also affects the depth chart choices.

Washington's is a different scheme. They basically deploy two two-gap NT types, well over 300, who are there to keep OLs off of thheir relatively small inside linebackers. They flank those two beasts with two hybrids, a DE/OLB like Joe Mathis who can pressure a Qb and a smaller OLB/DE who can drop into coverage. It's really a 2-4-5. while we play a relatively conventional 3-4-4.
Oregon appears to moving in this direction, too. It's easier for most colleges to find a couple big guys they can beef up than to find two bona fide defensive ends.

Very intrigued to see Wedington return punts.

I definitely remember him fielding a few, but I think most were fair catches (and thus not recorded as returns).
Irwin had a few sizable returns last season, so I like this -OR- designation.

I was not at all surprised that Love was not listed as a kick off returner for the San Diego State game.
When Shaw mentioned that Love may even return some kickoffs this year, he said it in a way that made it clear to me at least, that it was something that would be saved for certain games. My guesses would be Oregon and Washington, and late games (even possibly Big Game) and the post season as needed.
Also, I could see Love never actually returning a kick off. It could just be away for pressuring the kicker to give Scarlett the ball in a favorable spot, and just generally to mess with their heads. To my recollection, Stanford has unleashed some special teams surprises especially in tough, loud stadiums. A good kick off return can hush a crowd, and give a quieter atmosphere for the offense. Would seem especially helpful at Autzen and Husky Stadium.

Here is what I see on the depth chart.
One of only two frosh to crack the first depth chart apparently is coming back to school after a previous life in the FBI and a rural Washington town.
He does seem to have aged well.

There are three True Frosh on the depth chart:
Wilson, Booker, Petrucci.
Eligibility-wise, there are 14 Frosh or RS Frosh on the depth chart.
Didn't mention this earlier, but the fact Dylan Boles is there and Thomas Schaffer isn't, probably says some good things about Boles.
